Valorie - Palm Springs

It all started with a text from val saying you should come down tomorrow in the morning so we can take pictures. We always joke around like this so i didn’t take things to seriously but little did i know she was actually serious. the problem is i had to work. She is only around for a few more days before she has to head back home to carson city and start a new semester of school. I was troubled. On one hand she is my best friend and i hardly ever get to see her. On the other hand i really need the money and a day missing off my check would hurt me alot. Well i decided i rather struggle for a week then miss a chance to hang out with his amazing girl. I woke up early and drove two hours to palm springs. We quickly ate breakfast and looked for a location to shoot. We found some amazing windmill type things that line the 10 freeway but there were some construction guys around staring and val just felt to uncomfortable. We found a pretty deserted location and started to shoot away. The problem i ran into was it was a very bright sunny day. The sun was very harsh and i was blowing highlights everywhere. Also the CLS didn’t want to fire all the time. I did my best trying to line an umbrella with the sun line to defuse alittle of the light and used another flash with no defuser trying to combat the shadows the harsh sunlight created. I never seen val more on her game then today. Every look she was giving me was amazing. Sadly we only had a few hours to shoot and they quickly went by. I wish i could of shot her all day. The worst part about seeing this girl is the feeling i get right after leaving her company. It’s a feeling of sadness and i begin to miss her right away. hopefully i will see her soon we have some big plans for more shoots. Today was a very difficult shoot for me and really put my knowledge to the test. Half way though shooting i remembered i could stop down on the exposure, then i had better results.

strobist: sb-800 on camera with defuser set as a master. sb-600 on the right of camera bare pointed at subject to try to over power the sun. If anyone has any advice to over power the sun and underexpose the background for next time let me know.
